French and Indian War
Britain faced enormous debt. They began taxing colonists which led to resentment.
Benjamin Franklin
One of the Founding Fathers, helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was one of its signers
Continental Congress
Served as the government of the 13 colonie for a while the congress ratified the first national constitution and the Articles of Confederation, which would be replaced by the US constitution
Thomas Paine
Wrote Common Sense, which encouraged a lot of people to go through with the revolution
Declaration of Independence
Written by Thomas Jefferson, it declared that the 13 British colonies were separating from Great Britain and explained why
Shay’s Rebellion
A series of violent attacks on courthouses from ex-Revolutionary War soldiers who opposed state economic policies causing poverty and property closers. Showed how weak the Articles of Confederation were.
George Washington Presidency
Nominated first chief justice, established first national bank, set up his own presidential cabinet
John Adams Presidency
Taken up with foreign affairs, almost went to war with France, but an undeclared naval war called the “Quasi-War” broke out. People did not like the Alien and Sedition acts, which allowed the government to arrest people who disagreed with them
Jamestown
First colony in America, the settlers succumbed to a variety of diseases. Death tolls were high. Cannibalism happened. But they started farming Tobacco and made a lot of money so the settlement grew
Toleration Act
Gave freedom of worship to Nonconformists, firmly established the Glorious Revolution.
Glorious Revolution
Series of events which culminated in the exile of King James II and the accession to the throne of William and Mary
Salem Witch Trials
Occured in Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693, More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft
