French and Indian War/Seven Years War
French and Indians vs. America/England:
- As the English moved into the Ohio River Valley, the French got mad and built outposts at entry spots. They wanted to protect the fur trade
- George Washington attacked a French outpost, lost badly. Some other shit went down
- England officially declared war on France in 1756. Indians allied with France
- War dragged on for years, England finally gained upper hand and won
Seven Years war effect
England was the undisputed colonial power over America. The colonists were promised pay for helping in the war effort. Never got it which made them mad
Pontiac’s Rebellion
Indians were mad over the outcome of the Seven Years war, attack colonial outposts . The “Paxton Boys” murdered a bunch of them
Proclamation of 1763
Forbade settlers from moving west of the rivers in the Appalachians. People did not listen and got angry at the British. Marks the end of Salutary Neglect
Why did Salutary Neglect end?
British had a large debt from the Seven Years War, thought the colonists should help repay it
Sugar Act
Established new taxes, also aimed at stopping molasses smugglers
Currency Act
Forbade colonists from issuing paper money
Stamp Act
Covered all legal documents, taxed them. Angered the colonists
Reaction to the Stamp Act
Mobs burned officers, Sons of Liberty was created, no tax collectors were willing to do their job out of fear. Stamp Act was eventually undid.
Townshend Acts
- Taxed goods imported directly from Britain
- Some of the money was set aside to pay taxpayers
- Created several new government offices
- Created writs of assistance (British officers could search any place they suspected of hiding smuggled goods)
Quartering Act
Allowed troops to station in colonists homes, forcing the colonists to feed and care for them
Boston Massacre
A mob threw snowballs at soldiers, who fired back, killing five. A massive propaganda campaign followed, with colonists claiming they fired into an innocent crowd
Boston Tea Party
Sons of liberty dumped about 10,000 dollars worth of tea into the Boston Harbor, in response to the British granting the East India Company a monopoly on tea trade and creating a new tax on tea. The actions that followed led to the revolution
Intolerable Acts
Britain’s response to the Boston Tea Party. Closed the Boston Harbor until the tea was re-paid for. Tightened English control in general. Colonists believed that their days of freedom were over.
Quebec Act
Fueled colonist anger after the intolerable acts, it gave Catholics more freedom and extended the boundaries of the Quebec Territory
