perio Flashcards
marginal bleeding vs bleeding on probing
Marginal bleeding reflects how well the patient is able to carry out effective
plaque control daily, whilst bleeding on probing from the base of the pockets indicates disease activity and periodontal breakdown.
marginal bleeding - probe gently walked around sulcus
bleeding on probing - probe goes to base of pocket
ramjfords teeth
16, 21, 24, 36, 41, 44
what is used to indicate BOP on a six point pocket chart
+ or - symbols
where is the mobility score written on six point pocket charts
within the crown of the tooth on the picture
on an abbreviated pocket chart how are sites of health (pockets less than 4mm) recorded
either with a 0 , dot or -
on an abbreviated pocket chart sheet which charts should be completed at a patients first visit
middle one
how is BOP indicated on an abbreviated pocket chart
either with a red circle around pocket depth number or a dot above or below the number
modified plaque score
0 - no plaque
1 - plaque only visible with probe
2 - plaque visible without probe
ramjfords teeth divided into 3 (interproximal, buccal and lingual/palatal) and each area given a score
scores added and divided by total number possible (36) to give a percentage
modified bleeding score
0 - no bleeding
1 - bleeding
measures marginal bleeding rather than BOP so probe walked gently around gingival sulcus
ramjfords teeth divided into 4 (mesial , distal , buccal , palatal/lingual) and score recorded for each area
scores added and divided by total number possible (24) to give a percentage
GDHS management of patients scoring BPE 3
full periodontal chart for sextants initially scoring 3 AFTER initial treatment
The SDCEP guidelines suggest full periodontal pocket chart for sextants with BPE=3 before treatment, AND at re-evaluation. The British Society for Periodontology Guidelines suggest full periodontal pocket chart for sextants scoring a BPE of 3 after initial treatment. At
BPE probe
0.5mm ball on end and one black band at 3.5 - 5.5mm
also known as WHO probe
PCP12 probe
used for periodontal pocket charting e.g 6ppc
no ball on end , bands at 3mm intervals
2 black bands - 3-6 and 9-12
what probing force should be used when doing a BPE
20-25 grams
