LA Anatomy Flashcards
where does the trigeminal nerve divide into its three main branches
three divisions arise from the trigeminal ganglion which is situated in the middle cranial fossa of the skull (temple area)
how does the opthalmic division exit the middle cranial fossa and where does it travel next
via the superior orbital fissure and travels to the orbit
how does the maxilliary division exit the middle cranial fossa and where does it travel next
via the foreamen rotundum and travels to the pterygopalatine fossa
how does the mandibular division exit the middle cranial fossa and where does it travel next
via the foreamen ovale and travels to the infratemporal fossa
for each division of the trigeminal nerve does it carry sensory or motor fibres
opthalmic - sensory
maxillary - sensory
mandibular - sensory and motor
what does the opthalmic division supply
sensory innervation to forehead, scalp , cornea, upper eyelid
what does the maxillary division supply
sensory innervation to cheeks, sides of nose, upper lip , hard and soft palates, maxillary teeth and gingiva
what does the mandibular division supply
sensory innervation to lower lip , chin , mandibular teeth and tempoauricular area
motor innervation to the muscles of mastication and mylohyoid muscle
what are the three main branches of CN V1
frontal , lacrial and nasocilliary
what branch of CN V2 branches before exiting the cranium
meningeal nerve - supplies dura mater
zygomatic nerve
branch of CN V2
supplies sensory innervation to orbit
enters orbit via inferior orbital fissure
infraorbital nerve
branch of CN V2
enters orbit via inferior orbital fissure then leaves skull to exit face via infraorbital foreamen
supplies part of upper lip , lower eye and sides of nose
also gives off middle superior alveolar nerve and anterior superior alveolar nerve which supply pre molars and their gingiva and canines and incisors + gingiva respectively
posterior superior alveolar nerve
branch of CN V2
supplies sensory innervation to molars and their gingiva
nasopalatine nerve
branch of CN V2 pterygopalatine ganglion
exits via incisive foramen
supplies anterior hard palate
greater palatine nerve
branch of CN V2 pterygopalatine ganglion
supplies posterior hard palate
