Adam
First man God created. Placed in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it. Expelled from the Garden
after eating from “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”
Eve
Formed from one of Adam’s ribs. Tempted by the serpent; ate the forbidden fruit and gave some
to Adam. Thereafter expelled from Eden with Adam. Became the mother of all the living.
Cain
Rejected by God after offering only “some” of his fruit, in contrast to the “first-fruits” of Abel.
Killed his brother Abel; was expelled east of Eden; and received a “mark” from God as protection from
being slain.
Abel
Offered the “first-fruits” of his flock, thereby finding favor with God. Murdered by his brother
Cain.
Seth
Hebrew for “granted,” or “compensation.” Born after the murder of Abel. So named by Eve for
she considered him a compensation from God in lieu of the deceased Abel.
Enoch
Lived for 365 years and walked with God for 300 years and then ascended to heaven.
Methuselah
The oldest man who ever lived; died at the age of 969 years in the year of the Flood.
Noah
Built the ark, thus saving his family from the flood and preserving mankind. After the flood
entered into a new covenant with God to fill the earth. Planted a vineyard, became drunk; fell naked in
his tent; and was discovered and humiliated by his son Ham. Noah cursed Ham because of this event.
God found Noah righteous in a totally corrupt generation.
Shem
The second son of Noah. The father of the Semite people.
Ham
The youngest son of Noah. Was cursed by Noah for seeing his nakedness.
Japheth
The oldest son of Noah. With the help of his brother Shem, he covered the nakedness of
their drunk father.
Terah
Father of Abraham, Haran, Nahor and Sarah. He settled in Haran until his death.
Abram / Abraham
Father of the Israelites. Set out from Chaldea to Canaan, the land promised by
God to his descendants. Twice denied a marital relationship with Sarai, his wife, in fear of death. Name
changed from Abram, which means a “noble father”, to Abraham, which means “father of many
nations”. Established the covenant of circumcision between him and God. Interceded with God for the
salvation of Sodom and Gomorrah. Gave a tithe to Melchizedek. His son, Isaac, was born when he was
100 years old and then he was tested by God to offer Isaac as a burnt offering.
Lot
Accompanied Abraham into Canaan but then settled separately in Sodom. Taken captive by
Kedorlaomer and rescued by Abraham. Delivered by angels from the destruction of Sodom and
Gomorrah. During flight, Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. Lot and his daughters
ultimately refuged in a cave in the nearby mountains. Father of Ben-ammi and Moab by each of his
two daughters.
Sarai / Sarah
Name changed from Sarai, which means “princess of one person”, to Sarah, which
means “princess of a whole nation”.
Melchizedek
King of Salem and priest of the most high God, who met Abram and received a tithe
from him.
Hagar
Sarah’s servant, given as a concubine to Abraham to bare him children. Born Ishmael to
Abram.
Ishmael
Despite Abraham’s intercession with God, he was rejected as the chosen seed. Settled in
Paran, becoming a great warrior and father of the Ishmaelite’s and many Arab tribes.
Moabites and Ammonites
The two tribes which extend from Lot’s two sons, Moab and Ben-ammi.
Born to Lot after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, each by one of his own daughters.
Historically regarded as intense enemies of Israel.
Isaac
Abraham’s son of Promise.
Rebecca
Found by Abraham’s steward at the city of Nahor in Padan-aram. Mother of Jacob and Esau.
Bethuel
Nephew of Abraham and father of Rebekah.
Laban
Brother of Rebecca. He deceitfully married Jacob first to Leah and then to Rachel.
Keturah
Wife of Abraham (after Sarah) by whom he had six sons.
Jacob / Israel
Father of the nation of Israel. Upon Esau’s return from the field, bought Esau’s
birthright with a bowl of lentil soup, swearing by oath. Deceived his blind father to acquire Isaac’s
blessing intended for Esau. God gave him twelve sons and a daughter by his two wives, Leah and
Rachel, and two of his wives’ servants, Bilhah and Zilpah. After a night of wrestling with God, Jacob’s
name was changed to Israel, which means “he who wrestles with God”.
Esau / Edom
While famished, sold his birthright to Jacob. Lost his father’s blessing after Jacob went
to Isaac dressed in animal fur, posing as Esau. Long after, when the descendants of Jacob came out of
Egypt, the Edomites warred against Israel.
Leah
Her father deceitfully passed her off in marriage to Jacob. Jacob’s preference was Rachel. Leah
quickly bore Jacob six sons and one daughter before Rachel ever had a child. Mother of Reuben,
Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun and Dinah.
Rachel
Mother of Joseph and Benjamin. Jacob eagerly served seven years and then seven more for
her hand in marriage. Died giving birth to Benjamin.
Bilhah
Mother of Dan and Naphtali.
Zilpah
Leah’s maidservant and the mother of Gad and Asher.
Reuben
Committed adultery with his father’s concubine Bilhah, forfeiting the birthright. Intervened
for Joseph’s life when the sons of Jacob sought to kill him. He pledged the life of himself and his sons
when Jacob was unwilling to let Benjamin go to Egypt.
Simeon
Took part with Levi in avenging his sister Dinah against the Shechemites, thus bringing
trouble on all Jacob’s family.
Levi
Took part with Simeon in avenging his sister Dinah against the Shechemites, thus bringing
trouble on all Jacob’s family. From Levi comes the Levitical priesthood.
Judah
Interceded on behalf of Joseph so that his life was spared. Met by a prostitute and
unknowingly lay with and impregnated his daughter-in-law Tamar. Reuben forfeited the birth-right
because of incest; Simeon and Levi forfeited the birth-right because of their conduct against Shechem;
Judah, therefore, received the honors and leadership of the firstborn.
Issachar

Zebulun
Youngest son of Leah.
Joseph
Hated by his brothers because his father loved him most of all and was given a rare,
multicolored robe. Received dreams concerning his future preeminence. Sold into slavery by his
brothers, and eventually sold in Egypt to Potiphar. Appointed overseer of Potiphar’s house. Falsely
accused of rape by Potiphar’s wife and thrown into prison. While in prison he interpreted the dreams
for two of Pharaoh’s officials. Interpreted the two dreams of Pharaoh of Egypt. Pharaoh appointed
Joseph second in Egypt. Reconciled himself to his family upon their visitation to Pharaoh. Brought the
“house of Israel” into Egypt.
Benjamin
His mother died in giving him birth.
Dan
Son of Bilhah.
Naphtali
Son of Bilhah.
Gad
Son of Zilpah.
Asher
Son of Zilpah.
Dinah
Daughter of Jacob and Leah. Seduced by Shechem, son of Hamor, when Jacob’s camp was in
the nearby countryside. This led to the terrible revenge of Simeon and Levi in massacring all the
Shechemites.
Shechem
When Jacob returned from Paddan-aram he settled at Shechem and purchased land from
the sons of Hamor. Raped Dinah, and settled with Jacob to marry Dinah, yet was vengefully murdered
along with all his settlement by Simeon and Levi.
Tamar
The wife of Judah’s son Er; then after his death, married Onan and on his death Judah
promised to her his son Shelah. This promise was not fulfilled and Tamar avenged herself by dressing
as a prostitute and lying with her father-in-law Judah. She became pregnant with twins, Perez and
Zerah. One of the five women mentioned in the line of Jesus.
Er
The eldest son of Judah. The first husband of Tamar. Slain by God because of his wickedness.
Onan
Second son of Judah. Second husband of Tamar. Like his brother Er, God slew him because of
his wickedness.
Shelah
Third son of Judah. Promised to Tamar as her husband but never fulfilled.
Perez and Zerah
The twin sons shamefully born to Judah by Tamar, his own his daughter‐in‐law.
Asenath
The wife given to Joseph by Pharaoh in Egypt.
Manasseh
Joseph’s first son. His name means forget. One of the twelve tribes to inherit the promised
land.
Ephraim
Joseph’s second son. His name means twice fruitful. One of the twelve tribes to inherit the
promised land.
Moses
The great “law giver”. He was rescued from the water and adopted by a daughter of Pharaoh.
He grew up in the “House of Pharaoh”. At 40 years he slew an Egyptian for beating an Israelite, and
fearing recompense fled to Midian. There he married Zipporah, daughter of Reuel, a Midianite priest.
God appeared to him on Mt. Horeb in a burning bush and appointed him deliverer of His people.
Returning to Egypt with Aaron, his brother and spokesman, he demands freedom for his people from
Pharaoh. Received revelation, including the Ten Commandments, from God atop Mt. Sinai. He
delivered the Israelites from slavery, established them as a nation, and prepared them for entrance
into Canaan. Saw Canaan from atop Mt. Nebo and died with his body never found. Succeeded by
Joshua.
Reuel / Jethro
Moses’ father-in-law and priest of Midian. In Exodus 18, he advises Moses at Sinai to
set judges over subordinate legal cases, leaving Moses with only the weightier cases (“The Jethro
Principle”).
Zipporah
Wife of Moses.
Gershom
The son whom Zipporah circumcised in order to save Moses from being killed.
Aaron
Moses’s brother and spokesman, whom was three years older. While Moses is on Mount Sinai,
Aaron is swayed by the people to create a golden calf to worship. Was given the high priesthood for
himself and his descendants. Died on Mount Hor after the transference of his office to his son, Eleazar.
Miriam
The sister of Moses and Aaron. She and Aaron complained against Moses for marrying a
Cushite, and was subsequently struck with leprosy, but later cured. She is a prophetess who led the
Israelite women in dancing with tambourines while she sang the song of praise and victory.
Nadab
The first son of Aaron. As priest he and his brother were smitten by fire from the Lord. Their
offense was kindling the incense in their censers with fire not taken from the altar.
Abihu
The second son of Aaron. As priest he and his brother were smitten by fire from the Lord. Their
offense was kindling the incense in their censers with fire not taken from the altar.
Eleazar
The third son of Aaron. Appointed successor to Aaron in the office of high priest.
Ithamar
He was consecrated to the priesthood along with his brothers, and after the death of Nadab
and Abihu, he and Eleazar alone discharged the functions of that office.
Kohathites
One of the three divisions of Levites who had charge over the Tabernacle. They oversaw
the most holy portion of the vessels of the tabernacle, including the ark.
Gershonites
One of the three divisions of Levites who had charge over the Tabernacle. They oversaw
the tabernacle coverings, curtains, hangings and cords.
Merarites
One of the three divisions of Levites who had charge over the Tabernacle. They oversaw
the heavier parts of the Tabernacle like the boards, bars, sockets, pillars, etc.
The Twelve Spies
Moses selected one leader from each of the twelve tribes of Israel to spy out
Canaan. After forty days they returned and ten of the spies gave a negative report, alarming the people
who then proposed to elect a new leader and return to Egypt. But Caleb of Judah and Joshua of
Ephraim two of the twelve spies, gave a faithful report. The people refused to enter and were made to

wander the wilderness 40 years, one year for every day of exploration, until a new generation should
arise to possess the land.
Joshua
An Ephraimite, son of Nun. One of the twelve sent to explore Canaan. Gave a faithful report
about Canaan along with Caleb. Successor to Moses.
Caleb
The Kenezite, son of Japhunneh. One of the twelve sent to explore Canaan. Gave a faithful
report about Canaan along with Joshua. All the Israelites twenty years or older perished in the
wilderness except Caleb and Joshua.
Korah
Son of Izhar and grandson of Kohath. Leader of a rebellion (“Korah’s Rebellion”) against Moses
and Aaron. Dissentious about Moses and Aaron’s rise to priesthood and leadership, Korah and his
associates presented themselves at the door of the tabernacle, took censers, lit them, and burned
incense on them to signify their equality with Moses and Aaron. Korah, with Dathan and Abiram,
refused to appear before Moses and were swallowed up by the earth. Then 250 rebellious Levites were
consumed by fire from the Lord. The line of Korah, however, did not die out.
Dathan
Conspired with Korah against Moses.
Abiram
Joined Korah in the conspiracy against Moses and Aaron.
Balak
King of the Moabites. Hired Balaam to curse the Israelites who were encamped near the
confines of his territory, but his designs were frustrated.
Balaam
Bribed by Balak to curse the nearby Israelite encampment. Despite the desire to curse he
could only prophecy the bright future of Israel. While on his way to Balak, Balaam’s donkey veered out
of his control in order to avoid being destroyed by an angel of the Lord. Balaam did not see the angel
and after losing control Balaam beat his donkey who then spoke audibly against him. Nevertheless
Balaam taught the Moabites that seducing Israel to commit fornication would bring God’s wrath upon
them. Balaam was slain with the Midianites in battle against Israel.
Phinehas
Son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron. During the Moabite seduction of Israel, Phinehas put
to death an Israelite man and a Midianite woman caught in immorality induced by the Moabite false
gods. The zeal of Phinehas appeased the Lord’s wrath and stopped the plague from destroying the
nation. He was then promised that the priesthood would remain in his family forever.
Sihon
King of the Amorites, who refused passage to Israel. The Israelites then defeated them in
battle. All the Amorites were destroyed and their land captured by the Israelites.
Og
King of Bashan. Defeated and killed in battle.
