Pentose Phosphate Pathway Flashcards
Purpose of PPPW
to produce high energy redox for pentose production (ribose), fats, cholesterol, and glutathionine
Rate limiting step
initial step, Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase conversion of glucose 6 phosphate into something else (dont owrry about it)
this is the oxidative phase
The ultimate intermediate in the pentoss phosphate pathway is
ribulose-5-phosphate
ribulose 5 phosphate does what
it can be used to make ribose-5-phosphate and nucleotide biosynthesis
PPPW mode 1
much more ribose 5 phosphate required than NADPH
F6P and G3P used as substrates
no nadph produced
PPPW mode 2
NADPH and ribose-5-phosphate needs are balanced
G6P used mostly
PPPW mode 3
NADPH needed more than ribose 5 phosphate
2 NADPH produced
ribulose–>ribose–> G3P and F6P recycled
PPPW mode 4
BOTH NADPH and ATP are required
Ribose converted into G3P after producing NADPH in order to produce pyruvate and ATP
