Pelvis & Gluteal Region Flashcards
What is the widened part of the iliac crest called?
Iliac tubercle
Where is the pelvic floor muscles located?
on the floor of true/lesser pelvis
What two openings are located in the pelvic floor muscles?
anus and urethra
What are the boundaries of the pelvic floor?
Lateral wall: Obturator internis
Postero-lateral wall: Piriformis
What innervates obturator internis?
Nerve to obturator internis
Where is the attachment sites of obturator internis?
anterior surface of ilium, ischium, and obturator membrane
also on the greater trochanter via intertrochanteric fossa
What action does the obturator interis create?
ER and the hip
What is the attachment sites of piriformis?
anterior aspect of sacrum S2-S4
pass through the greater sciatic notch
on sacrotuberous ligament-greater trochanter via intertrochanteric fossa
What innervates the piriformis?
anterior rami of sacral plexus S1, S2
What action does piriformis create?
ER at the hip
On the pelvic floor what two muscles are located?
Coccygeus and Levator Ani
What are the attachment sites of coccygeus?
ischial spine
anterior/inferior sacrum
coccyx
What innervates the coccygeus?
anterior rami of sacral plexus S4, S5
What action does coccygeus create?
supports pelvic viscera, coccygeal flexion
What are the three parts of Levator ani?
lateral- iliococcygeus
posterior- pubococcygeus
forming a sling around the orifices- puborectalis
What innervates the 3 levator ani muscles?
Nerve to levator ani S$
Inferior anal nerve
Coccygeal plexus
What action does levator ani create?
pelvic viscera
assist in bowel and bladder continence
What innervates the external and urethra sphincters?
pudendal nerves S2, S3, S4
What bundle of nerves are most important for bowel and bladder function?
Sacral plexus
What are the three superficial gluteal muscles?
Gluteus maximus
Gluteus medius
Gluteus minimus
What are the attachments of gluteus maximus?
posterior aspect of sacrum and coccyx posterior aspect of iliac crest on sacrotuberous ligament onto iliotibial band (majority) Gluteal tuberosity (minority)
What innervates gluteus maximus?
inferior gluteal nerve
What action does gluteus maximus create?
Extend hip
ER of hip
What are the attachments of gluteus medius?
gluteal surface of ilium
posterior aspect of iliac crest
onto
greater trochanter of femur on the supero-lateral aspect
