what is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)?
a complication of a sexually transmitted disease (eg gonorrhoea or chlamydia) which can cause damage to the fallopian tubes, ovaries and uterus
what are common symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease?
pelvic pain that radiates into the abdomen
abnormal vaginal discharge
pain during intercourse or urination
what is a ectopic pregnancy?
a pregnancy outside the uterus
what are s&s of an ectopic pregnancy?
pain on one side of lower abdomen/groin
vaginal bleeding
history of missed period
diarrhoea, feeling faint, or pain on defecation
shoulder-tip pain
what are s&s of an ovarian cyst?
pelvic pain
irregular menstruation
pelvic pressure
pain after intercourse
LBP
swollen abdomen
possible complications if size increases: pressure symptoms, infarction or haemorrhage, rupture
what are s&s of ovarian cancer?
stomach or pelvic pain
back pain and ascites
persistent bloating or increased stomach size
feeling full quickly or having problems with eating
needing to pass water more often
what are fibroids and where do they occur?
benign tumours that occur in the uterus wall
what are s&s of fibroids?
usually asymptomatic
heavy periods
abdominal swelling
urinary problems

what is endometriosis?
a condition where endometrial tissue (uterine lining) occurs outside of the uterus (most commonly diagnosed in women in their 30’s)
what are s&s of endometriosis?
period pain
dyspareunia (pain with intercourse)
cyclical or chronic pelvic pain
subfertility

what is a pelvic prolapse?
a condition where a pelvic organ such as the bladder or uterus drops into a lower than normal position and can protrude into the vaginal canal (occurs in older women)
how can endometrial (uterine) cancer present?
usually presents as a post-menopausal bleeding
