elbow conditions Flashcards
what are the most common causes of an olecranon bursitis?
repeated trauma (resting elbow on desk)
direct elbow trauma
crystaline arthropathies
RA
what is a ‘pulled elbow’?
radial head dislocation through annular radioulnar ligament
who is most at risk for a pulled elbow and why?
young children (2-5 yoa) ,due to sudden traction to a childs extended and pronated arm (eg swinging child)
what are the most common s&s of pulled elbow?
painful elbow
child refuses to use arm
arm is held in a flexed and pronated position
what is the most common treatment for pulled elbow?
hyperpronation technique: elbow hold in 90° flexion while arm is firmly pronated
what is a posterior elbow impingement?
impingement of the medial corner of the olecranon within the olecranon fossa
what are s&s of posterior elbow impingement?
fixed flexion deformity
posterior pain on forced elbow extension
what is the treatment of choice for posterior elbow impingement?
surgery
what is often the cause of a medial collateral ligament strain (aka pitcher’s elbow)?
acute or chronic excessive valgus stress (repeated throwing)
what are s&s of a medial collateral ligament strain?
pain over medial elbow
instability on valgus stress test
what are other names for extensor tendinosis?
tennis elbow
lateral epicondylitis
which tendon is mostly affected in an extensor tendinosis?
extensor carpi radialis brevis
what are s&s of extensor tendinosis?
pain over lateral condyle and the extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle belly
pain can refer to posterior wrist
pain on active wrist extension + active or passive wrist flexion
decreased grip strength
what are other names for flexor/pronator tendinosis?
golfer’s elbow
medial epicondylitis
what are s&s of flexor-pronator tendinosis?
tenderness over medial epicondyle
pain over resisted wrist flexion with elbow extension
