What is pelvic inflammatory disease?
A vaginal infection which spreads through the cervix, often causing inflammation of the mucosa of the Fallopian tubes and ovaries.
What is the most common organ causing PID?
Most common - Chlamydia trachoma’s
2nd most common - Neisserria Gonorrhoea
What are the signs and symptoms of PID?
Asymptomatic Post coital bleeding Pelvic Pain ovarian pain Adnexal pain Vaginal discharge Temperature Right upper quadrant pain Dysuria
What are the complications of PID?
Chronic pelvic pain
Infertility
Ectopic pregnancy
FITS- HUGH- CURTIS syndrome (RUQ pain)
What are the causes of PID?
Usually transmitted during sex
Can be caused by retrograde menstruation
What is fits-hugh-curtis syndrome?
Infection and inflammation of the liver capsule. When adhesions (like violin strings) form between the anterior liver with the anterior abdomen or the diaphragm.
What is prophylactic treatment?
ALL sexually active women with pelvic pain and adnexal tenderness are treated just incase.
What are the risk factors for developing PID?
Multiple sexual partners Intra-uterine device No barrier protection Previous PID younger age
What are the investigations for PID?
Pregnancy test (to rule out ectopic)
STI swabs
Vaginal ultrasound
Blood tests
What is the treatment for PID?
Injection of ceftriaxone (gonorrhoea)
Oral Doxycycline 100mg, 14 days (chlamydia)
Metronidaozle 400mg, 14 days (other organisms)
