What is maternal mortality?
The death of a women while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy
Excludes accidental or incidental causes.
What is maternal morbidity?
Severe health complications which occur in pregnancy and/or delivery which DON’T result in death.
How often is there a maternal death?
1 every 2 minutes.
What are the types of maternal death?
Direct maternal death
indirect maternal death
late maternal death
What is direct maternal death?
Death related to obstetric complication during pregnancy, labour or puerperium (6 weeks)
What are common causes of direct maternal death?
Haemorrhage Sepsis Pre-eclampsia Obstructed labour Unsafe abortion
What is an indirect maternal death?
When a mother has a pre-existing health condition which is exacerbated by pregnancy
What are common causes of indirect maternal death?
Malaria
Congenital heart disease
How common are direct and indirect maternal deaths?
Direct - 87% of all maternal deaths.
Indirect - 13% of all maternal deaths.
What are late maternal deaths?
Over 42 days after birth/termination but within 1 year after the end of pregnancy
What are common causes of late maternal death?
Malignancy
Suicide
Drugs and alcohol
Cardiac disease
What are common causes of maternal deaths worldwide?
Haemorrhage
Unsafe abortion
Hypertensive disorders
What is perinatal death?
Death of the foetus (stillbirth) or neonate.
What is a stillbirth?
birth of a dead baby after 24 weeks gestation or weighing more than 500g
What is an early neonatal death?
Death of a baby within the first week of life.
