A

Consumption of polished rice (no husk white rice) leading to thiamine deficiency; Sx: Wet & dry=presence or absence of oedema; advanced neurovascular & cardio disorders; delirium; muscle weakness & wasting; memory loss; opthalmoplegia; peripheral vasodilation; increased venous return to the heart; death may result from high CO failure

Wernicke-Korsakoff

A

Alcoholics, poor nutrition, lacking in Thiamine; Sx: delirium, mental derangements, ataxia, opthalmoplegia; late/chronic psychosis; anterograde amnesia; distinct pattern of brain damage (focal lesions); irreversible for late stage; Rx: thiamine inj. 3 days per oral

PDH Deficiency (congenital abnormality)

A

Defect in E1 complex; inability to convert pyruvate to Acetyl-CoA; Sx: increased blood pyruvate, lactate, alanine, alpha-ketoglutarate levels; X-linked dominant
