Pathology & Symptoms #2 Flashcards
Radial Nerve Paralysis
Inability to bring limb forward, toe dragging and difficulty in getting the foot in a position to bear weight.
Ringbone
Non articular: visible hard growth with no lameness. Articular: Lameness. Obvious bone growth & joint stiffness/immobility.
Bowed Tendons
Swelling on the caudal aspect of the leg. Lameness varies according to severity of the strain. Pain reaction to palpation.
Bucked Shins
Early stage, mild lameness with inflammation of dorsal cannon bone. Latter stage, bowed dorsal surface.
Osselets
Radiographic evidence of bone growth. May not show severe lameness when not worked, but always get sore if worked.
Carpitis
Non articular: visible hard growth with no lameness. Articular: Lameness. Obvious bone growth & joint stiffness/immobility.
Curb
Inflammation, heat & swelling below the point of hock. Walking on toes. Obel Grade 2 lame.
Broken Bones
Complete break: Non weight bearing. Obvious abnormal bending of limb. Saucer fracture: Radiographic diagnosis.
Capped Hocks & Elbows
Unsightly blemishes on the extremities of the joints. No lameness associated.
Splints
Varying degrees of lameness, depending on location & severity of the metacarpal lesion.
Windpuffs
Soft swelling behind & just proximal to the fetlock. No lameness.
Stifle Lameness
Radiographic evidence of changes to the joint. Lameness is evident as a hiking action in the hindquarter.
Stifled
Hind limb becomes fixed in an extended position, moving off at a walk, or while trotting.
Stringhalt
In motion there is a sudden unusual snatching movement to lift the foot, that may be enough to hit the belly with the leg.
Sprained Suspensory Ligament
Lameness & inflammation of the ligament. Located by palpating, pain reaction and heat. Usually close to fetlock joint.
