Hoof Tester
Tool used to apply pressure to various parts of the foot to locate pain.
Pulse (relating to lameness)
Can be found at the point where the lateral and medial arteries pass over the proximal sesamoids.
Lameness
Abnormal gait due to pain.
Therapeutic Shoeing
Farriery strategies aimed at preventing a potential injury, or managing chronic lameness issues.
Obel Grade 3 Lame
Reluctant to move and vigorously resists attempts to lift the other foot.
Flexion Test
Holding a limb in a certain position for about 45 seconds before releasing it and trotting the horse off to ascertain lameness.
Limb
An involuntary change in gait, as a result of trying to protect an injured anatomical structure.
Pathological Shoeing
Farriery strategies aimed at helping horses with diseased or damaged limbs.
Obel Grade 4 Lame
Refuses to move and will only do so if forced.
Regional Anesthesia
A veterinary procedure, used in pinpointing an injury by sequentially deadening specific areas of the limb.
Obel Grade 1 Lame
Alternate lifting of the feet. Stilted gait at the trot. No lameness evident at the walk.
Surgical Shoeing
Farriery related to repairing hooves following surgery.
Corrective Shoeing
Farriery applied to improvement of a foot toward an ideal.
Obel Grade 2 Lame
Willing to walk, but stilted. Still able to lift the other foot off the ground.
