Pathology & Reasons #2 Flashcards
Carpitis
Carpus varus conformation predisposes horses to this condition. Heavy loads & rough terrain.
Curb
Stress due to bad conformation. Sickle & cow hocks, hard stops & jumping predispose to this injury.
Radial Nerve Paralysis
Blunt force trauma. Kick or running into a fence or gate post.
Bowed Tendons
Overworking an under conditioned horse. Poor conformation. Misstep. Bad trim/shoeing.
Broken Bones
Direct trauma to the area. Kicks, collisions, etc.
Ringbone
Concussion resulting from steep digital conformation. Uneven joint spacing as a result of valgus/varus conformation.
Osselets
The result of dorsiflexion of the fetlock joint.
Capped Hocks & Elbows
Direct and repeated trauma to the area. Stall kicking, lying on hard ground or contact between shoe and swelling.
Bucked Shins
Mostly affects young racehorses. Flexing of the immature bone causes small cortical fractures.
Bone Spavin
Straight hocks and hard work concentrated on using the hind quarters.
Thoroughpin
A sign of stress, causing inflammation of the tendon & sheath in this area.
Stringhalt
Speculative. Suggestions of brain, spine, or nerve damage, affecting the lateral extensor muscle.
Stifle Lameness
Injury as a result of osteochondrosis, arthritis, fracture, ligament avulsion or falling sideways.
Stifled
Common with post legged conformation. Muscles not toned and loose patella predispose this problem.
Windpuffs
Thought to be a sign of stress. No lameness, heat, tenderness, inflammation or synovial fluid changes.
