What is otitis media?
inflammation of middle ear, usually viral
If chronic, what might be the organism causing otitis media?
pseudonomas aerugonosa
What is cholesteatoma?
not a tumour
middle ear is lined with squamous epithelium instead of cuboidal/columnar
Are nasal polyps common?
Yes but not inchildren
What should you consider in nasal polyps in young?
cystic fibrosis
What else might cause nasal polyps?
aspirin sensitivity, asthma, nickel exposure
What is Wegener’s granulomatosis?
autoimmune
small vessel vasculitis in resp tract and kidneys
What is Nasopharyngeal carcinoma associated with?
Epstein Barr virus
What might cause laryngeal polyps?
vocal abuse, infection, smoking, hypothryoid
What may cause a contact ulcer?
vocal abuse, GORD
What is squamous papilloma related to?
HPV
What is paraganglioma?
tumours in clusters of neuroendocrine cells dispersed throughout body, can be chromaffin positive, or negative (negative is when you get clusters in nose, nasopharync etc)
Who is likely to get Warthin’s tumour?
Males over 50
