What do FBCs show in glandular fever?
lyphocytosis with atypical lymphocytes
Most also have abnormal LFTs
What tests should be done for glandular fever?
FBCs
EBV serology or heterophil antibody test
How is diagnosis of retropharyngeal abscess made?
plain XR or CT
What test should be done for rhinitis?
patch test
How is septal haematoma diagnosed?
inspection with nasal speculum or an otoscope - look for collection of blood between perichondrium and septal cartilage
What should always be done with unilateral tinnitus and deafness to check for acoustic neuroma?
MRI
Investigation of OME?
otoscopy (look for fluid levels or bubbles behind the ear drum, change in colour (dull grey or yellow)) Drum motility Tuning fork tests Audiometry tympanometry
What should be done to test for acute otitis media?
swab of pus (if eardrum perforates, otherwise sample can’t really be obtained)
Diagnosis of mastoiditis?
CT
Diagnosis of TMJ dysfunction?
MRI
When should swabbing be done for otitis externa?
only in unresponsive cases
Diagnosis of otosclerosis?
otoscope - patients can have Schwarz sign (pink tinge to ear drum)
Audiometry - shows dip in hearing at 2kHz (Cahart’s notch)
Which features must be present to diagnose Meniere’s disease?
long lasting vertigo worsening tinnitus aural fullness sensorineural hearing loss other causes must be excluded
3 tests for EBV infection diagnosis?
EBV serology, Paul Bunnel test, monospot test
