Pathology Flashcards
Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
Decreased blood flow through the coronary arteries due to ischemia
Angina pectoris
Severe chest pain caused by lack of oxygen to the myocardium secondary to ischemia
Coronary artery disease (CAD)
Blockage and restricted blood flow through the coronary arteries
Congestive heart failure (CHF)
Decreased effectiveness of the left ventricle to pump blood to the body resulting in fluid retention leading to pulmonary edema and heart failure
Bundle branch block (BBB)
Electrical impulse to the bundle of his is block resulting in the ventricles beating at a different rate from the atria
Valve Failure
The inability of the valves to correctly control the flow of blood through the heart.
stenosis
valve is too narrow and restricts the flow of blood.
Prolapse
incompetent valve closure causing leakage
congenital septal defect
a hole, present at birth, in the septum between two heart chambers allowing deoxygenated blood to mix with oxygenated.
aneurysm
weakness in an atrial wall that may result in rupture
Thrombus
(Staying still)
obstruction of an artery by a stationary blood clot
Embolus
obstruction of an artery by a blood clot (moving) or anything else moving through the blood stream
arrhythmia
irregular heartbeat
flutter (arrhythmia)
the atria beat too rapidly but maintain a regular pattern
Fibrillation (arrhythmia)
potential fatal arrhythmia in which the heart is quivering
