Pathogen & Disease Test: How to Prevent the Spread of Disease Flashcards
What factors can influence the spread of an infectious disease?
- social climate
- environment
- diet
- general health
- access to medical care
How can we control the spread of disease?
- Adopting Safe Behaviours
- Cleaning up the Environment
- Medical Care/ Treatment
- Immunization
Behavioural Control
transmission of disease can be prevented or significantly reduced by adopting safe behaviours:
- using condoms
- isolation/quarantine when ill
- appropriate personal hygiene practices (washing hands)
- cough into elbow not hands
- stay home if you are feeling unwell
Cleaning/Modifying the Environment
all pathogens require certain conditions for growth, reproduction and transmission. By modifying the environment to make it less suitable for pathogens, most infectious diseases can be controlled:
- development of effective sanitation and sewage treatment
- treatment of drinking water
- spraying drainage ditches
- draining swamps to eliminate breeding sites for mosquitos
- using larvacides and insect repellant
- spraying disinfectants to sterilize potentially contaminated surfaces
Medical Care
- immunization schedules (creates “herd immunity”)
- following aspetic and sterilization techniques ( disinfectants for objects/surfaces and antiseptics on living tissue)
- autoclaving medical instruments and biohazardous waste
- PPE
- treating those that are ill
Quarantine
separates people who have been exposed to a specific illness (but aren’t sick yet and don’t have symptoms) from others
Isolation
separates those who are already ill or infected from those who are not
Antiseptic Technique
a collection of medical practices and procedures that helps protect patients from dangerous germs
