Patchbay Flashcards
Typical cables for the patchbay
TT connectors (tiny telephone)
What type of wires are being used inside the patchbay?
Balanced signal cables, XLRs etc
Basic concept of the patchbay
Routing and re-routing balanced signals
Patchbay
The central location for all the audio wiring in a control room and studio
Mult
A passive bus that allows us to make multiple copies of an audio signal in parallel on a patchbay
Normals
A pre-existing connection that is made beneath the board of the patchbay to direct signal slow
Full normal
Breaks signal at both the input and the output, therefore completely redirecting the original signal
Half normal
Breaks signal at the input only, therefore you will reroute a copy of the signal, and the original signal will still flow to its pre-existing output
tl;dr - you now have two channels with the same signal
Open
There is no pre-existing connection made; no normal is established
Direct out
Shorter path for signal flow which has less noise floor because it skips the MTB
Inserts
Interrupts the signal and sends it to be effected
Typically used for dynamic processors (EQs)
Inserts on the channel path
Any EQs here will be recorded to the MTR
Inserts on the monitor path
Any EQs here will be heard but not recorded
Ancillary
Extra - additional patch points
Cue
Headphone mix, artist mix, cue mix
