DI Boxes Flashcards
DI
Direct injection
3 basic functions of a DI box
- Reduces instrument output level to mic level for direct input to the console
- Changes instrument’s high impedance signal to a low impedance signal
- Converts unbalanced output of instrument to a balanced signal
How can we bypass a microphone when recording instruments such as keyboards, synths, electric guitars/basses, etc?
We can use a DI box and plug into the console at mic level
Describe another function of a DI box?
It can prevent leakage between instruments when in same recording room as other acoustic instruments
Some DI boxes allow high level signals ______
To be taken from external speaker jack of an amplifier
Some DI boxes offer a 1/4” thru output, allowing ___
User to record direct signal, and also take a split of that signal to an amplifier
- A mic would be placed on the amplifier & recorded to either a separate track or combined with the direct sound & recorded to a single track
- Thru output could also feed an effects pedal, tuner, etc
Passive DI boxes
Do not require power to operate
Impedance matching transformer with a balanced output
Quality of this transformer is a main factor in the overall sound of it
Active DI boxes
Requires either phantom power sent from the mic preamp or another power source like a battery, or its own power supply (AC power)
Have more options for flexibility of manipulating the signal - filters, pads, ground lifts, impedance switchers
Tube DI boxes
Enhance harmonic distortion
Needs power supply to operate
