Neotek Flashcards
Multitrack Bus Assignment Switches
Sends signal from the fader feeding the MTB to an odd/even MTB output
MTB outputs feed the top of which row on the patchbay?
Row 3
Bus Trim
Boosts or cuts the bus level sent to the MTR
Bus Trim feeding the group fader on the group fader I/O
Bus trim can boost or cut level feeding the group fader
Track Pan
Sends signal out an odd/even bus
Track Pan when building group signal
Can be used to preserve the stereo image by setting the panner to the same position of the mix pan
Potentiometer & nickname
Twisty knobs lol; pots
MIC
Mic preamp brings mic level up to line level
Where does MIC feed signal to?
Feeds the mic input of the faders
LINE trim
Used to boost or cut the signal feeding the line input of the console
INSERT IN; FADER/MON
Activates the insert on a specific fader (Fader/Mon); the insert is used by patching in outboard gear through the insert send and returns
Row 5 of the patchbay
Insert Sends and Returns
What type of processing is used most commonly with INSERT IN?
Dynamic processing, but any other applications can be used
4 kinds of EQ
- high
- high mid
- low mid
- low
Top of the S curve affects which fader?
Monitor fader/small fader
Bottom of the S curve affects which fader?
Fader fader/large fader
PFL
Pre-fader listen
S curve: Buttons Up - what signal does the Monitor/Small fader accept?
Line signal/signal returning from the MTR
S curve: Buttons Up - what signal does the Fader fader/Large fader accept?
Mic signal/signal going to the MTR
REV button
Reverses the output of both faders;
Monitor fader/small fader will feed MTB
Fader fader/large fader will feed SB
Mix Pan
Stereo pan; feeds the SB
Master Fader
Final gain stage located in the stereo bus before the mixdown recorder and control room level
Control Room Level
Sends signal to the selected speakers in the control room
Auxiliary definition
Extra & additional
Auxiliary sends are outputs or inputs?
Outputs
Auxiliary sends level
Line
Basic description of Auxiliary send
Additional line level output of a console
Technical definition of Auxiliary send
A split from a signal path without interrupting the original signal flow
Neotek has how many stereo aux sends?
One; A/B
A/B aux send
Stereo; A left, B right
Aux button pairs
A and B
1 and 2
3 and 4
Aux Section Functions: Pre / Post
Pre or Post designates whether the split will occur before or after fader level
Aux Section Functions: Fader
Pushing Fader will designate the split to be taken from the Fader Fader (big fader) - not pushing fader will designate the split to be taken from the Monitor Fader (small fader) by default
Aux Section Functions: A/B default
Pre fader split from the Monitor Fader
Neotek has how many mono aux sends?
4 mono aux sends
Aux send potentiometers do what?
They determine how much level is sent from a source to a destination
If buttons are up on the Neotek, are the words on the buttons being activated?
No. The exact opposite of the word on the buttons is what is happening by default. When you push the button, then you activate the word on the button
Every aux send has a corresponding ________
Aux bus master
Nominal level on aux bus masters
7
Why is 7 nominal level on aux bus masters
7 allows extra headroom
3 configurations the Neotek can be set to
- Tracking
- Reverse Tracking
- Mixdown Mode
How many paths are there in Mixdown mode?
One - the monitor path, because it begins at the MTR
How do inserts and aux sends differ?
Inserts takes the same original signal, reroutes it to outboard gear (dynamic processors) and brings it back to the board - similar to a series circuit, one loop.
Aux sends creates a copy of the original signal, sends the copy to outboard gear (time-based processors) and brings that new wet signal back to the board to run ‘parallel’ to the original signal - similar to a parallel circuit.
Nominal level on Cue Masters
5
What are the two options to create a Headphone mix?
On A/B or Cue 1/2
Why are Headphone mixes usually on A/B aux sends?
Because the default for A/B is pre-fader
Which do you turn up first: Aux sends on the channel or the Aux bus master? Explain
The aux bus master, because if you turn on all the signal flowing into it, and then open the door last (aux bus master), we can’t hear what we’re sending into it, and we might blast our listener. It’s safer to open the door (aux bus master), then turn up the aux sends feeding it so we can hear the levels and avoid harming anyone’s ears
Explain how to make a headphone mix on Cue 1/2
You would have to push in PRE and FADER on the aux send strip because Aux 1/2 (cue 1/2 when being used for a headphone mix) is defaulted to POST and MONITOR. Then you would have to accept the signal on the Cue Master bus, pressing in Aux 1 or 2, and then turn up the Cue Master to nominal 5.
Talkback
How you communicate with the artist in the studio
- studio speakers - goes to the speakers in the studio
- slate - goes onto all the multitracks and can be recorded
- A/B, Cue 1/2 - goes straight to headphones
How to use talkback
You turn on whichever method of your choice (studio speakers, slate, A/B, Cue1/2) by pressing in its button, then push the Talkback button, and turn up the gain slowly while speaking into it until you can be heard
Is A/B one headphone mix?
Yes
Is Cue 1/2 one headphone mix?
No - these can be two separate headphone mixes
On the Neotek, how many mixes can you essentially make?
4: Control room mix, A/B headphone mix, Cue 1 headphone mix, and Cue 2 headphone mix
Rule 1 for Headphone mixes
Make sure you’re listening to the same mix as the artist
Rule 2 for Headphone mixes
Make sure you’re always wearing the headphone/cans when building or adjusting levels
Rule 3 for Headphone mixes
Review the Aux method questions and make sure:
Splitting off the return path
Splitting pre-fader
Rule 4 for Headphone mixes
Always communicate with the artist
Step 1 to build a Headphone mix and how
Open the path
AUX > Cue 1
Step 2 to build a Headphone mix and how
You hear the artist
Microphone > SB
Quickest way: Turn up pre-amp, press REV below the S-Curve - this sends the signal straight to the SB
Step 3 to build a Headphone mix and how
Artist hears you
Talkback > Cue 1
Step 4 to build a Headphone mix and how
Artist hears themselves
Turn up the Aux master to nominal, then slowly turn up the Aux send
Step 5 to build a Headphone mix and how
Now turn up the Aux sends on each channel that are assigned to the Headphone mix
Two types of analog meters
Segmented LED (light meter) and Volume Unit/VU (needle meter)
VU reads ________
Volume, specifically RMS
LED reads ________
Volume, and can measure peak amplitude and RMS
On the Neotek, Direct Outs go out on what channels?
27 to 32
How many Multitrack busses are there?
26
dB amount that can be boosted/cut on the EQs
12 dB
Y-Split
A split from the Fader fader path into the Monitor fader path, after being processed by an insert, filter, or EQ.
How to activate Y-Split
Press both ‘IN’ buttons on the I/O (pre-fader)
or
Press both MIC and BUS above the S-Curve (post-fader)
Highest frequency the High Pass filter can be dialed to on the Neotek
375
When mixing, your aux send(s) for purposes of parallel compression should be post-fader. T/F
False. If you were to adjust the original faders in your parallel compression scheme, the signal on the way to the compressor would change, altering the way the threshold reacted to the incoming signal, therefore affecting the amount of compression on the compressed track. So we want the parallel compression to be PRE so it will not be affected by any changes if we adjusted the original faders.
Mode MTR-90 should be in for Mixdown session
All Repro
Signal flow order for the console’s EQ, Filter, and Insert
