Botany
Characteristics
Vines
Herbbaceous or woody vine with auxiliary tendril
Vigorous perennial, medium to large toothed leaves.
Flowers
Solitary showy flower. Tubular calyx tube, Surrounded by a thread-like crown in the center. Three horizontal styles. Five sepals, 5 white petals, Five stamen Stamen unite into a elongated stalk bearing the ovary
difference between the druits pollinated by hand and natural pollination?
Most effective time for pollination is after the styles have completely………………
Fruit set is about 70% by natural pollination 100% by hand pollination. Hand-pollinated fruit are larger, heavier and higher in juice content 2.recurved
Growth and development
Altitude
After 4-10 flowers have set fruit further setting ceases. flowers buds are produced on new growth. Fruit set resumes when previous fruit matures
grows well in cooler regions from elevations 800-1500 m
Difference between purple and yellow passion fruit
purple passion fruit economic life time is 3-4 years
elevation of 800 masl
it has green tendrils
Purple passion-fruit can be kept for up to 4-5 weeks at 5oC and 80-90% humidity.
yellow passion fruit
economic life time is 8 years
altittude is 1200-1500m
Yellow-can only be stored for 1 week at
5- 7.5oC.
Climate
purple 18-30 degree celsius at day 4.5-13 at night matures vines withstands light frost injured at minus 1-2 degree celsius yellow shows more vigor wider ecological adaptibility than purple
Rainfall & Soil
A well distributed rainfall is needed.
Tolerates a wide range of soil types.
Vines are susceptible to poor drainage & water logging.
Soil pH may range from 5.5-5.8
Propagation
Propagated from seeds, cuttings, air layering or grafting onto seedling rootstock.
Growers plant selected seeds or use purple passion-fruit vines grafted on to Fusariun-resistant lines of the yellow passion-fruit.
Seeds
Wash, shade dry, sow or store at 10-13oC.
Give better than 85% germination if stored
for 3mths at room temperature
Seeds germinate in 2 weeks
Transplanting and spacing
transplant at 2-4 leaf stages into plastic bags
grow in semi shade for 1-2 months
gradually expose the plants to sun for 1-2 months
field transplant at 25-50 cm
warm areas- starrt with 2.5m
afeter harvest thin every vines at permanent spacing of 5m
Trellis selection
Most commonly used trellises are the;
‘Grape trellis’ / ‘fence’ trellis
‘T trellis’ / ‘Cross’ trellis.
Pruning
- Light selective prune (end of the production cycle)
- Remove all vines that reach the ground.
- Don’t throw long vines over the trellis.
- Vines entangled on the top may be removed,
- Leave pruned vines to dry in place.
Diseases
Alternaria brow spots Purple- Fusarium. Purple- Phytophthora blight. Passion-fruit woodness virus (PWV). Almost universal, aphid transmitted (Myzus persicae).
Post-harvest treatment
Purple passion-fruit can be kept for up to 4-5 weeks at 5oC and 80-90% humidity.
Yellow-can only be stored for 1 week at
5- 7.5oC.
Ethylene can be used to enhance skin-colour without affecting soluble solids or juice ph.
