What is Parvovirus in pregnancy (aetiology, RF)
Parvovirus b19 causes erythema infectiosum (fiths disease)- small dsDNA virus
Incubation 4-20 days, infective 10 weeks prior rash until 1 day after rash appear
in pregnancy - risk of transmission before 20W
transmit via blood or airborn
RF- children and susceptible adults
60% of adults over 20 are immune
Sx of Parvovirus in pregnancy
In young child//MOTHER
Rash, malaise, fever, arthalgua, transient aplastic crisis
Rash - SLAPPED CHEEK apprearance
(infants also have coryza, headache)
Neonate/antepartum
B19 crosses placenta before 20W and destroys RBC -> hydrops fetalis (High mortality) or misscariage
Ix and mx of Parvovirus in pregnancy
If exposed after 20w can more or less Ignore
IgM and IgG - if both neg, redo 1m, if either +ve -> serial USS
USS- foetal anomaly scan 4w after onset of illness, then serial scan 2w until 40w
Rubella serology too (present similar)
Mx -
Maternal/infant - self limiting
Intrauterine - Blood transfuse for foetal hydrops
complications - misscariage, foetal hydrops
