parts of the cell Flashcards
differ between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
- prokaryotes are very simple, no membrane bound organelles, but still contain few organelles. single celled organisms, cell wall
-eukaryotes are far more complex, have a nucleus and many organelles, uni and multicellular organisms
3 main parts of eukaryotes and what they provide
- cell membrane, boundary between cell and external environment, regulates what enters and leaves.
- nucleus, contains cells DNA and controls all cell functions, reproduction and growth
3.cytoplasm, portion between nucleus and cell wall containing organelles.
what is the nucleolus
part of nucleolus which is responsible for RNA and ribosome synthesis
does plant or animals contain more organelles, what are the extra ones
plants do with 12, animals contain 10
the extra ones are,
cell wall, provide extra support to the cell
plastids, function for food production composed of chloroplasts and chromoplasts
what is microfilaments function
the structure that forms the cytoskeleton of the cell, made up of proteins.
what is the function of microtubules
fibers that trteansport materials in the cytoplasm, uses specialized organelles, a part of mitosis, cell mobility, intracellular transport, ,maintaining cell shape
what is the function of the mitochondria
it is the power house of the cell, produces energy but breaking down sugars.
what is the endoplasmic reticulum, its functions, and its two parts
moves materials between nucleus and the membrane
smooth ER, makes, transports and stores fats
rough ER, has ribosomes attached, makes, stores, and transports proteins.
what is the function of the golgi apparatus
modifiers and packages big proteins to pass through cell membrane.
what is the function of the vacuole
fluid filled body used for storage of water and food waste, used to remove the waste from the cell
what is the function of lysosomes
the site of intracellular digestion, acts as defense by destroying foreign invaders, contains enzymes.
