Parts of the brain involved in speech, language, and hearing Flashcards
What is the cerebrum?
largest part of the brain; its left hemisphere is mainly responsibly for speech; it consists of many lobes, two of which (frontal and temporal) are involved in speech formation and understanding.
What is the Broca’s area?
area in the frontal lobe that generates words from thought and sends information to the motor cortex
What is Wernicke’s area?
area located behind the temporal lobe that is responsible for understanding and processing speech and written language
What is the arcuate fasciculus?
band of nerves that connects Broca’s area to Wernicke’s Area; it helps you speak clearly, create words, and understand concepts that are expressed in language.
What is the cerebellum?
area located in the back of the brain that is responsible for language processing, moving parts of your brain voluntarily (like closing your mouth and standing up straight), and controlling balance.
What is the motor cortex?
area located in the frontal lobe that takes information from Broca’s area and send it to the muscles so taht they can form speech.
What is the auditory cortex?
area in the temporal lobe that processes what you hear.
