buccinator, levator labii superioris alaque nasi, levator labii superioris, zygomatic minor, zygomatic major, orbicularis oris, and risorius, depressor anguli oris, levator anguli oris, depressor labii inferioris, mentalis, and platysma
What are the branches of the facial nerve (CN VII)?
cervical, buccal, zygomatic, temporal, and mandibular
What is the function of the orbicularis oris?
closes or purses one’s lips
What are the functions of the buccinator?
chewing, blowing, lip retraction, and tightening of the cheek
What is the function of the risorius muscle?
aids in smiling; is used when someone is smiling insincerely
What is the function of the levator labii superioris alaque nasi muscle?
open your nostrils and lift your upper lip
What is the function of the levator labii superioris?
elevating the corner of your mouth; it helps you smile
What is the function of the zygomatic minor?
elevates the upper lip; it is involved when someone gives a smug look
What is the function of the zygomatic major?
elevates and retracts the angle of the mouth
What is the function of the depressor anguli oris?
depresses the corners of the mouth; called the frowning muscle
What is the function of the depressor labii inferioris?
dilates mouth by pulling lips down and out; important muscle in kissing and playing the trumpet; think of someone pulling their lips down when grossed out (add an image)
What is the function of the mentalis muscle?
pulls out lower lip, elevates and wrinkles chin; also known as the pouting muscle
What is the function of the platysma muscle?
depresses the mandible
What does the occipitofrontalis muscle do?
moves the scalp of the skull and raises eyebrows
What does the orbicularis oculi muscle do?
opens and closes the eyelids
