Muscles of mastication Flashcards
What are the muscles of mastication?
digastricus, mylohyoid, temporalis, masseter, medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid, geniohyoid
What are the elevators?
masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid
What are the depressors?
mylohyoid, digastricus, and geniohyoid
What muscles of mastication are innervated by the trigeminal nerve?
masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid, anterior belly of the digastricus muscle, and mylohyoid
The geniohyoid is innervated by the
hypoglossal nerve (XII)
The posterior belly of the digastricus is innervated by the
facial nerve (VII)
The muscles of mastication include ____ and _____.
mandibular elevators and depressors
What does the masseter do?
brings the jaw up and closes the mouth
What does the temporalis muscle do?
brings the jaw up and pulls it back after has been retracted
What does the medial (internal) pterygoid do?
brings the jaw up at the same time as the masseter
What does the lateral (external) pterygoid do?
makes the jaw stick out.
What does the anterior belly of the digastricus do?
pulls the hyoid forward and depresses mandible
What does the posterior belly of the digastricus do?
pulls the hyoid back and up
What do the mylohyoid and geniohyoid both do?
depresses the mandible if the hyoid position is fixed
