Definition of a verb
- how is it used

Verb - describes actions and states (doing word)
Used with a subject to form a sentence
Eg. James peeled the Orange (actions)
Sarah can smell the roses (state)
What are the two (2) main types of verbs
- Describe usage in a sentence
- examples
Transitive
- verb followed by a subject.
Eg. James washed the dishes (someone is doing something to someone)
eg. James is cooking (used like intransitive to describe what someone is doing)
Intransitive
- verbs that cannot follow an object. It simply ‘does’ an action
Eg. Let’s eat, we lost the game.
Base form vs infinitive
- what is a base form verb?
- what is an infinitive verb?
- list examples.
Base form verb - a transitive or intransitive
infinite verb - refers to an action as whole, a consequence of action
rule: (to) + base form
Eg. (what does he hope to do?) He hopes to drive
What are the four (4) verb forms?
- list and give examples
- Base form (hope) (begin)
- Past simple (hoped) (began)
- Past principle (hoped) (begun)
- Present participle (hoping) (beginning)
Regular verbs - Past simple/principle = ..(ed) eg. Hope
Irregular verbs - past/simple do not end in ..(er) eg. Begin
Define an Auxiliary verb?
- List them (3)
- give examples
Helps to form a structure, a tense or expression.
Combines with present or past principles and/or infinitives.
The 3 auxiliary verbs are: (Do) (Have) (Be)
eg. John (is) having a shower.
I (have) been to italy.
(Do) you have a smoke.
