Adverbs - add meaning or information to the verb (action, quality or state)

What are the five (5) main types of adverbs?

  • give an example of each
  • how are they formed

Rule: Adjective + ..(ly). .. With exceptions

The five (5) types are:

  1. Manner - (eg. well, hardly)
  2. Place - (ie above, up, here, there)
  3. Time - (ie. now, then, soon, recently)
  4. Degree - (ie very, much, really, quite)
  5. Frequency - (ie once, twice, sometimes, always)

Where do adverbs go in a sentence?

A
  1. After the object of a transitive verb eg. He ate his lunch slow(ly)
  2. Place immediately after an intransitive verb eg. She was sleeping deep(ly)
