What is a common noun?

What are the four types of nouns?
Common noun, proper noun, collective noun, and abstract noun
What is a proper noun?
Specific / particular people, place, things. Important and have a capital letter
What is a collective noun?
The name given to a group/collective of nouns.
What is an abstract noun?
Names given to concepts, ideas or feelings. Cannot be recognised by senses
What are pronouns?
Takes the place of a noun. To avoid repitition
What are personal pronouns?
Stands for a person. Eg. I, you, he, she, they, them, it, one
What is a possesive pronoun?
Shows ownership. Eg. mine, his, hers, theirs
What is a relative pronoun?
Acts as a conjunction. Refers/relates back to a noun already mentioned. The teacher who screams. Which
What are reflexive pronouns?
Ends with self or selves. Doing something to yourself. Eg. himself, herself, themselves
What are indefinite pronouns?
Indicates an indefinite amount. Eg. few, some, many, someone, nobody
What are interrogative pronouns?
Asks a question. Who? which? what? whose?
What are demonstrative pronouns?
Shows direction. Eg. this, that, those, these
What are adjectives?
Qualify nouns and pronouns
What are descriptive adjectives?
Most common type of adjective. Describes a noun or pronoun. Eg. green, old, tall and short
What are demonstrative adjectives?
Points to a particular noun. Must be followed by a noun. Eg. this person, that example, these things, those deliquents
What is an interrogative adjective?
Asks questions. Followed by a noun. Eg. which pen? whose car?
What are indefinite adjectives?
Unknown quantity. Followed by a noun. Eg. some people, few places
What are numerical adjectives?
Numbers. Eg. seven brides, a million bucks
What are adjectives to indicate order?
Shows position. Eg. first team, last place, final answer
What are possessive adjectives?
Shows ownership of a particular noun. Eg. my mistake, your house, their problem

The adjective always come right in front of the noun

Shows number, tense and subject. Can stand on its own
What is translative?
Followed by a direct object. Eg. he crashed the car.
What is intranslative?
Not followed by a direct object. Eg. he crashed into a tree
What are non-finite verbs?
Infinitives and participles
What are infinitives?
To… (never split an infinitive). Eg. to laugh, to eat
What are present participles?
End in ‘ing’. Eg. laughing, eating, swimming
What are past participles?
End in ed/en/t. Eg. laughed, eaten, spent
What are gerunds?
Verbal nouns. Eg laughing is good for you.
What are gerundives?
Verbal adjectives. Eg. the laughing hyena
What are auxiliary verbs?
Help non-finite verbs become finite verbs.
What are adverbs?
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs (give us more information). Three types of adverbs

- Adverbs of manner
- Adverbs of place
- Adverbs of reason
- Adverbs of negation
What are adverbs of time?
Answer the question when? Eg. I ate snails yesterday
What are adverbs of manner?
Answer the question how? Eg. I ate snails cautiosly

Answer the question where? Eg. I found snails there
What are adverbs of reason?
Answer the question why? Eg. due
What are adverbs pf negation?
The words not, nor or neither. Eg. I will not eat snails again

What are prepositions?
Shows position of one noun in relation to another. Direction
What are examples of prepositions?
Over, above, on,out, outside, against, of, under, beneath, below, next to, behind, inside, in, through

What are conjunctions?
connects two words, phrases or clauses. co-ordinating and subordinating
What are co-ordinating conjunctions?
