What is film jargon?
Specific terminology
What is a shot?
A photo or film still taken by a camera. Distance from the camera. One shot out of a moving series
What is a scene?
A number of shots that are united by something similar. For example a place
What is a sequence?
A number of related scenes. They are joined scenes
What is a title?
The name of the film
What are the credits?
List of names of actors who have contributed to the film. At the end of the film. Cast is known as actors. Crew is the backstage
What is the soundtrack?
That which you hear. It is the score (composed), dialogue and sound effects. Synchronous means it is in sync with picture, can see where it is coming from. Opposite is non-synchronous
What is focus?
The adjustment of lens to create a desired effect (blurred or sharp focus). For example a composition
Who is the producer?
Controls the business side of film making. They raise the money and employ the crew and cast
Who is the director?
The director controls the creative, artistic side of film making
Who is the cinematographer?
Consults with the director about the various film techniques used
Who is the editor?
Selects and links together the shot to create the final product
How many shots are there?

What is an extreme longshot?
Show scene from a distance. People are small and significance. The background is important. It is called an establishing shot or panoramic shot if it is used to set the scene
What is a longshot?
The entire personal object appears in the frame – from head to toe. There is a little bit of a background
What is a medium longshot?
The person or object is seen from knee to head.
What is a medium/mid shot?
The person or object is seen from the waist up
What is a medium close up?
The personal object is seen from middle of chest to the top of the head
What is a close up?
The face feels this frame. It is used to show detail and facial expression
What is an Extreme close up?
One particular aspect of a person or object shows the frame. There is no background. It is used in suspense movies. For example nose, toe etc
What is an angle?
Where the camera is
How many different types of angles are there?

What is the eyelevel angle?
Camera is that eye level of subject
What is a high angle?
The camera is positioned above the subject. It makes the subject appears small and insignificant . Looking down. Makes them appear vulnerable and small.
What is a low angle?
The camera is positioned below the subject. It makes the subject appear large and powerful and dominant. Looking up
What is a birds eye view/ crane shot?
The camera is positioned directly above. Only top of the object can be seen
What are film techniques? how many are there?
The way you creatively approach and compile these shots and sounds to make a movie. There are 8
What is cut?
From technique. Most common form technique. Involves an invisible and instantaneous shift from one shot to the next. It is like a blink of an eye
What is the fade technique?
Image on screen slowly disappears
What is the dissolve/mix technique?
Slowly fades out of one shot and gradually fading end of the next. Images overlap for a short while
What is the wipe technique?
One image is wiped from the screen whilst next takes place
What is the slow motion shots technique?
Amount of shots per second is decreased. The image appears to be moving slowly
What is the super imposition technique?
Writing/image over existing picture. Sound to existing soundtrack
What is the speed up shot technique?
Amount of shots per second is increased. The image appears to be moving quickly
What is the voice over technique?
Here voice but do not see actor. Not synchronous
What is picture analysis?
There are four types of picture analysis. This includes line, colour, texture and composition
What is line picture analysis?
Horizontal (open), vertical (close up), diagonal, smooth, jagged etc
What is colour picture analysis?
Warm, cool, dull, bright et cetera
What is texture picture analysis?
Rough, smooth, refined, soft, hard
What is composition picture analysis?
Shot, angles, focal points
How many camera movements are there?

What is the panning movement?
Horizontal movement of camera head to left or right. It’s called a zip when movement is performed quickly
What is the tracking movement?
Camera is mounted on a trolley (dolly). Runs on a track and move towards or away from subject
What is tilting movement?
Vertical movement of camera head (up to down)
What is the craning movement?
Vertical movement of entire camera. Camera is mounted on a crane
What is the zooming movement?
Zoom lens allow camera to in large or decrease size of image. The camera remains in the same place
What is the man held shot?
Cameraman hold the camera. It is not placed on a stand. It is used to show family taking photos
What is a focal point?
Where is the eye immediately drawn? What does the creator want us to notice?
