Q

Principle of Butterfly Hooks

A

To lift opponent’s inner thigh, making opponent’s leg into a lever to manipulate the hips, and move your opponent forward, back, or over depending on situation. To be effective for sweeping, opponents posture must be broken at the head, his base disturbed by moving him forward, and structure manipulated with an under-hook (preferably all three).

Q

Seated 1/2 or full Butterfly Sweep (w/ under-hook)

A

In seated guard, establish Butterfly Guard w/ one or both hooks, secure under-hook by framing opponent’s neck/shoulder w/ far arm in collar tie position to push opponent’s alignment away from smashing in while ducking/fighting for under-hook on same side as being pushed. Can then quickly grip opponent’s other tricep to remove his base and sweep to that side.

Q

1/2 Butterfly Sweep from 1/2 Guard

A

As w/ any 1/2 guard, establish the near-side under-hook ASAP (before u get smashed) and defend against cross face aggressively. If opponent wizzars can take opposite foot (bottom foot) and hook opposite from under-hook thigh, drop top foot outside of opponent’s under-hook side knee, and sweep in that direction. If no wizzar control, control cross face arm, use top leg as hook on same side as under-hook and bring bottom leg outside of non-under-hook side knee and sweep in that direction. You may not need the outside knee “block” if you use double Butterfly hooks(?) NEED BASE IF GOING THIS DIRECTION

Q

Butterfly Arm-Drag Sweep

A

If unable to secure under-hook, can attempt to arm drag on opponent’s cross-face arm. If in the 1/2 Guard w/ a strong knee shield hip yourself square to ur opponent to drop the hook in with ur knee shield foot.
For the Drag: Remember to push the wrist in and pull at the tricep to avoid a tug of war, and sweep w/ the other side butterfly hook. Or u can just snag the tricep just above the elbow for mechanical advantage and tug towards you. Again, get your non-hooked leg to the outside of the sweeping side knee to smooth out the sweep.

Q

Arm Drag to Back Take

A

While still in the 1/2 Guard or Seated Butterfly, so long as you have base, you can drag the non-under-hook side arm across your body to come out the back. Best case scenario is you move yourself around your opponent by swinging yourself behind him, using his arm as a rope. SECURE THE HIPS, SECURE THE TORSO, DROP A HOOK, AND TAKE HIS BACK.
