part of aos 1 unit 3 Flashcards
i literally cant remember any of these from aos 1
SELYE’S GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME:
Stress response from a biological perspective
The experiment: (examined stress on physical health)
- Rats were put into a lab, and their tails were pulled to illicit a stress response
- Over a period of time, organs changed (lungs, stomach)
STRENGTHS OF GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME:
Evidence of relationship between stress + illness
Highlights a predictable pattern that can be measured in individuals
LIMITATIONS OF GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME:
Research not conducted on humans
Does not account for individual differences and psychological factors
LAZARUS AND FOLKMAN’S TRANSACTIONAL MODEL OF STRESS AND COPING:
Stress involves an encounter between individuals and their external environment
A stress response depends upon the individuals interpretation (appraisal) of the stressor, and their ability to cope
Neural communication:
1) Sensory neurons on skin feel sensation
2) Pass along afferent tracts through PNS -> spinal cord in the CNS -> brain
3) Interneurons in brain in communication with motor neurons
4) Motor neurons sends signal via efferent pathways through spinal cord in the CNS -> PNS -> muscles
