Part 1. Pinot Noir Flashcards
Pinot Noir is best grown in cool and moderate climates. Why is this? (2 marks
Pinot Noir is early ripening
In hot climates it can become jammy and unattractive
The two regions stated below can grow Pinot Noir successfully. For each region, identify
TWO natural factors and explain how they moderate the climate. (12 marks)
Los Carneros (6 marks)
Natural Factor
• Fogs: Fog will keep vineyards cooler in the morning by blocking the sun. It blankets the vineyards so they are slower to warm up.
• Breezes: Breezes will cool vineyards in the afternoon. It moderates the hot afternoon temperatures in the vineyard
Central Otago (6 marks) Natural Factor • Diurnal range: A large diurnal range provides cool temperatures at night and slows down the warming of the vineyard during the day.
• Altitude: Higher altitude vineyards are cooler and will have lower day and night-time temperatures
• Southern latitude: The most southerly wine-making region in NZ, it is far away from the equator (giving longer days during the growing season
