Slam down :
- The teacher slammed a book down to get the students’ attention.
- I guessed he was pretty angry because he slammed the phone down.

Pull out :
- A car suddenly pulled out in front of me.
- I was just waiting for a gap in the traffic so that I could pull out.
- a bit further on i pulled out to overtake a big lorry.
- He pulled out in front of me without even looking.

Fall on :
• They fell upon the bread and cheese as if they had not eaten for days.

Come across :
- (usually + as) The hero in the film comes across as slightly crazy.
- Helen came across as being an extremely intelligent woman.
- I thought Paul Glover came across well in the interview.
- We were told that Sue would be ideal for the job, but she came across badly when we talked to her.

Pin down :
- (often + to) Paul says he’ll come and visit in the spring but I haven’t managed to pin him down to a date yet.
- (sometimes + on) She refuses to be pinned down on how much her business lost in 1995.
- I’ve been trying to get a decision from Stephanie but she’s proving difficult to pin down.

Comedown ( n ) :
• A Monday at work is a bit of a comedown after such a brilliant weekend.

Shout ( sb ) down :
- One of the speakers was shouted down when she tried to discuss the issue of abortion.
- I couldn’t hear what the prime minister was saying because some people at the front were shouting him down .

Go down :
• It used to be a really good restaurant but it’s really gone down recently.

Come down :
- A lot of trees came down in the storm.

Put down :
- (often + for) You have to put a child down for nursery almost as soon as they’re born.
- (sometimes + to do sth) I’ve put myself down to do French classes next term.
- (sometimes + as) He’d put me down as next of kin so I was the first to be informed of his death.

Go into ( sth ) :
- He went into a mad rage at the news.
- Kathy went into peals of laughter when I told her.

Stack up :
- If you stack the dishes up by the sink, I’ll do them later.
- She stacked up a pile of logs by the garage wall.

Put out :
- You’d better put your cigarette out before Terry sees it.
- Ben grabbed the fire extinguisher and put the fire out.
