Go into ( sth ) :
- She mentioned that she’d had an accident but she didn’t go into it in any detail.

Put out :
- Earlier in the day the palace had put out a statement denying the rumour.

- He brushed off the allegations, claiming that they were ‘complete nonsense’.

Back up :

- (often + on) I know you’re telling the truth so I’ll back you up on that.

Inlet :
- Remove the inlet from the washing machine and check that there are no obstructions.

Go down :

Get around :
• A clever lawyer might find a way of getting around that clause.

Turn down :
- He was offered the job but he turned it down because it involved too much travelling.
- Look, I’m offering you a free meal - you’re surely not going to turn me down?

Revved up :
- a rousing song that got the crowd all revved up
- He came home all revved up because he had won the tournament.
- She is revved up for her trip.

Put ( sb ) down :
- The boss is always putting me down in front of everyone in the office.
- Why do you have to put me down in front of everyone like that?
- (sometimes reflexive) You put yourself down too much.

Go over to :
- The company that I work for has recently gone over to flexi-time.
- We used to have electric heating but we’ve recently gone over to gas.

Lie around :
• I spent a week in Spain, lying around on the beach.

Bring in :
• The government will bring in legislation to restrict the sale of guns.

Knock down :
- We got them to knock the price down because of the damage.
- Can’t you manage to knock him down a few pounds?
- (often + to) She wanted £200 but I knocked her down to £175.
- I knocked him down by £100 but he wouldn’t go any lower .

Run over :
- the meeting ran over so I missed my train .
- I don’t want this meeting to run over so I’ll be brief.

Knock over :
• The bank was knocked over by a gang armed with sawn-off shotguns.

Box in :
- (usually passive) When I returned I found that my car had been boxed in.
- He was running well until the final lap when he was boxed in by the Italian.
محدود کردن، پابند کردن، گرفتار کردن
Tie down :
- He’s tied down by having to work every Saturday.
- The reason he didn’t have a family was that he didn’t want to be tied down.
- He doesn’t want to be tied down by a relationship.

Nose around :
I don’t have an answer to your question, but I’ll nose around to see what I can find out.

Dive into :
- When neighbouring countries are having a war you can’t just dive in.
- Unfortunately, I had dived into the discussion without being fully informed.

Stack up :
- Storms were causing the planes to stack up over Kennedy airport.

Take on :
- We usually take on extra staff over Christmas.
- They only took her on because she’s the manager’s niece.

Shoot up :
• Karl has really shot up since I last saw him.

Cut in :
- A car suddenly cut in right in front of us and I had to slam on the brakes.
- She cut in on a red Ford, forcing the driver to brake heavily.

Fall on :
• The gang of youths fell on him, kicking and punching him in the stomach.

Call ( sb ) in :
- (often + to do sth) detectives were called in to conduct a fresh inquiry.
- The police called him in for questioning.

Pick up :
- I picked up quite a lot of Spanish during my six-month stay in Madrid.
- There’s no formal training for a job like this - you just pick it up as you go along. (= you learn how to do the job as you work)

• The word had been struck out and another word written over it.
