What is PD?
Chronic, progressive neurodegenerative condition resulting from the loss of dopamine-containing cells of the substantia nigra of the basal ganglia
What is the usual age of onset?
Around 60
What gene may be mutated?
PINK1
What is Parkinsonism?
Triad
- Resting tremor (pill-rolling)
- Bradykinesia & difficulty initiating movement
- Rigidity (cog-wheeling)`
Facial signs
Reduced expression, reduced blinking
Gait?
Slow, shuffling gait
What is lead pipe rigidity?
Constant resistance felt when limb is passively flexed
Speech?
Slow & monotonous
How is PD diagnosed?
Examination & clinical presentation
When should someone be referred?
Before starting treatment
What drugs may be causing PD symptoms?
Anti-psychotics

What is first line for PD?
Levodopa
How does Levodopa work?
Dopamine precursor
Side effects of levodopa
Dyskinesia, nausea
Give 3 treatments of PD

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors

What type of drug is ropinirole?
Oral dopamine agonist
Side effects of ripinirole
Hallucinations & impulsive behaviour
What anti-emetic would you not give someone with PD?
Metaclopramide - can worsen symptoms of PD
What drugs interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors?
Anti-depressants
