Progressive condition affecting motor neurones, causing weakness & eventually death (ALS)

What age does it normally present at?
A
50-70

Males

What is the prognosis?
A
Poor: rarely >3 yeats

What is the pathology?
A
Usually sporadic, unknown cause & RFs
Protein aggregation?

What may be some early symptoms?
A
Weakness in the ankle or leg
Trip, difficulty climbing stairs, weak grip

How can diagnosis be confirmed?
A
Largely clinical, but
EMG to confirm denervation of muscles due to degeneration of motor neurones

What drug can prolong life by <4 months?
A
Riluzole (sodium channel blocker)
