Parasites Flashcards
Protozoa
- unicellular eukaryotes
- lack cell wall
- lives in moist habitats
- mainly reproduce by binary fission
Sarcodines
ACANTHAMOEBA KERATITIS
- contact lenses provide ideal attachment surfaces, enabling corneal adherence
- ACANTHAMOEBA are often infected by other pathogens
- many are resistant against anti-protozoal drugs and disinfection
ENTAMOEBA HISTOLYTICA
- anaerobic
- waterborne pathogen
- leads to cramps and diarrhoea
- further growth invading intestinal wall
- if left untreated, abscesses may form and can be fatal
Flagellates
GIARDIA INTESTINALS/LAMBLIA
- lives in intestines of beavers and muskrats
- transmitted to humans via faecal contamination of water sources
- can lead to diarrhoea, intestinal cramps nausea and wright loss
LEISHMANIA
- flagellated and anaerobic
- cutaneous
- visceral
- treatment includes antimonial drugs
Ciliates
BALANTIDIUM COLI
- human and swine pathogen
- only cysts are infective
Symptoms of malaria
- chill fever
- vomiting
- severe headache
- anaemia
- fatigue
