Paraneoplastic Syndromes/ Tumor markers of Importance Flashcards
What types of cancer cause Cushing’s syndrome?
Small-cell lung carcinoma (most common)
Pancreatic carcinoma
Neural Tumors
What cancers are associated with hypercalcemia of malignancy (most common paraneoplastic syndrome)?
Squamous cell lung cancer
Breast and renal carcinoma
Adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma
Note- hypercalcemia d/t involvement of skeleton by a tumor is NOT a paraneoplastic syndrome.
What cancers tend to cause Acanthosis nigricans?
Think- Visceral malignancy Gastric carcinoma (also lung/uterine carcinoma)

Bronchogenic carcinoma Thymic neoplasms (Think- these two do muscle weakness and bone probs)
What cancers cause migratory thromboemboli (Trousseau syndrome)?
Pancreatic carcinoma
What causes nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis?
Many advanced cancers, especially adenocarcinomas
Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)- marker for what kind of cancer?
Prostatic adenocarcinoma (Also elevated in BPH- nonspecific)
CEA levels are elevated in what kinds of cancers?
Most adenocarcinomas, carcinomas of colon, pancreas, lung, stomach, heart
What would cause a-Fetoprotein levels to rise?
A fetus
Hepatocellular carcinomas (most common)
Germ cell tumors of testes (some)
What does CA-125 indicate?
Ovarian cancer and many adenocarcinomas
What does an elevated HCG indicate?
Pregnancy
Trophoblastic and testicular tumors
What cancer can immunoglobulin be used to test for?
Multiple myeloma/other plasma cell tumors
