Definitions
Panting= hasty, counterflow, Dyspnea, SOB
Wheezing= audible breathing
Dyspnea= SOB, subjective feeling
Asthma= wheezing=phlegm
Frog rail= in throat
when severe ancillary muscles of neck involved
Panting
Xiao Chuan aka SOB hasty panting counterflow panting qi ascent dyspnea
most illnesses have some kind of panting
relationship between LU and KI
LU governs qi, KI root of Qi
LU manages breathing, KI governs absorption of qi
LU qi counterflow or KI unable to absorb= panting
Differentiation
- Between LU or KI
- If LU, whether external or internal
(external evil=LU, cough/phlegm= LU; internal + KI sxs low back pain, ringing in ears= KI, fluids go out to limbs/or clear copious urine= KI) - If KI, all vacuity patterns, Q= whether yin or yang vac.
water-cold= vacuity w/in repletion
phlegm rheum=vacuity w/in repletion
Excess patterns
- Wind-cold damage
- Heat Evil Congesting the LU
- Phlegm turbidity Obstructing the LU
- Suspended Rheum
- Propping Rheum
- Water-cold invading the LU (Spillage rheum)
Vacuity Patterns
- LU Qi
- LU YIN
- KI Yang
- KI Yin
Wind-cold damage
Panting and cough together spitting thin white phlegm sudden onset of disease must be + aversion to cold, fever, NO sweat, P: tight/floating
Heat Evil congesting LU
Panting + cough together rapid breathing nasal flaring loud voice spitting of thick yellow, smelly phlegm or blood streaked phlegm pain of chest and rib side often: + fever, Hx of external invasion T: Yellow fur P: rapid
Phlegm Turbidity Obstructing LU
Panting + cough together
severe= chest + rib side pain
inability to lie down
profuse, sticky slimy white phlegm hard to cough up
Must be + fullness/oppression in chest, heaviness/fatigue of limbs,
T: white, slimy fur
P: slippery
can be vomiting or constipation or
also SP Qi def: torbidmintake, abd distention, sloppy stools, white complexion, spirit fatigue, lack of strength
EDEMA
Floating edema=face
sinking edema=limbs
Suspended Rheum
Signs of water rheum suspended rib-side and invading LUs
hasty panting
maybe cough, SOB, Distention, fullness ribside
may/not severe pain
Propping Rheum
Panting and cough SOB inability to inhale when lying down profuse, frothy white phlegm often + floating edema of face T: white, slimy fur P: string like and tight
may linger several years-tendency to catch external w-c easily
severe= cold and fever, panting fullness/spitting cough, pain in back, soreness of low back, treembling/stirring of body
Water-cold invading (spillage rheum)
Panting and scanty qi
maybe cough/SOB
either profuse, thin, white phlegm or frothy drool
panting cough occurs after severe swelling and signs of SP and KI yang def: white or dusky complexion, fear of cold, cold limbs, withered spirit, HT palps, scanty urine, low m, reduced appetite, sloppy stools
LU Qi Vacuity (XU)
enduring panting + maybe cough
panting and coughing is low and forceless
thin white phlegm
must be + low LU Fx: low voice, laziness in speaking, ability to contract external evils easily,
Maybe signs of qi vacuity : white complexion, dizziness, spirit fatigue and lack of strength, spontaneous sweating worse w/ movement
T: Pale w/ white fur
P: vacuous
LU Yin vacuity (XU)
hasty panting, SOB and Dry cough
Often w/ LU dryness: hoarse voice, dry mouth and throat
May be signs of depletion of yin fluids: malar flush, emaciation, 5-palm heat, tidal fever, night sweats,
T: red w/ little/no fur
P: thin/rapid
