Preferred serum test for pancreatitis
lipase > amylase
lipase is more sensitive and specific for pancreatitis
Etiologies of pancreatitis
EtOH
hypertriglyceridemia
cholelithiasis
hypercalcemia (PTH, etc)
Tx of pancreatitis
enzyme Tx for malabsorption
decreased fat intake
medium-chain triglycerides (easier to digest)
Complications of pancreatitis
ascities
pancreatic pseudocyst
DM, malabsorption, esp fat and fat-soluble vitamins
