Pancreas Flashcards
Name the parts of the pancreas
Head, neck, body, tail and unicate process
What do the islet cells produce?
Alpha cells - glucagon
Beta cells - insulin
D cells - somatostatin
Describe the ductal drainage system of the pancreas?
Main pancreatic duct - drains the head, body and tail of the pancreas and opens into the major duodenal papilla
The accessory pancreatic duct drains the uncinate process and opens into the minor duodenal papilla
What is the blood supply of the pancreas?
Superior pancreaticoduodenal artery - from the gastroduodenal artery
Inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery from the SMA
Pancreatic branches from the splenic artery
What vessels are encountered during a Whipple’s procedure
Abdominal aorta
SMA and SMV
PV
Left renal vein
Splenic vein
Superior and inferior pancreaticoduodenal arteries
Which ligament connects the tail of the pancreas with the spleen?
Lienorenal (splenorenal) ligament
What is the peritoneal relationship with the pancreas?
All retroperitoneal expect for the tail
Which vessel is present behind the body of the pancreas?
Splenic artery
Which vessel is present behind the neck of the pancreas?
Portal vein
What space is found behind the pancreas?
lesser sac
Describe the development of the pancreas
Ventral bud- from the hepatic diverticulum and it gives rise to the lower part of the head and uncinate process
Dorsal bud- from the dorsal aspect of the duodenum and gives rise to the upper part of the head, neck, body and tail
