palpation Flashcards
TVP of C1
between mastoid process and earlobe
jugular notch of the sternum
start at lateral edge of clavicle, move medially until finding a groove at the middle
L4 SP
in line with the iliac crest
T12 SP
find L4 in line with the iliac crest, count SPs up until T12
C7 SP
find atlanto-occipital joint, move down the spine until finding bony prominence of C7, last vertebrae to move during neck flexion
T1 SP
find C7 by locating bony prominence at base of neck, C7 will move during neck flexion, T1 is just inferior and will remain still
rib 1
find clavicle, sink into the tissue of scalenes, solid resistance found at the shaft of rib 1
rib 7
lines up with the inferior angle of the scapula
rib 2
lateral to the sternal angle
rib 3
in line with the spine of the scapula in anatomical position
c2-c6 bifid SPs
find the occiput, move inferiorly to find c2
TVP of C1
between the mastoid process and earlobe, just posterior to the angle of the mandible
Laminar groove
between the TVPs and SPs (best found on thoracic spine)
angle of louis
find the jugular notch, move inferior to find a ridge
xiphoid process
find the sternal notch and move inferiorly until reaching the bottom of the sternum
floating ribs
go to L4, count up to T12, move out from there
rotatores
between TVPs and SPs. best found in thoracic spine
s2 spinous process
in line with the PSIS
rib angles
greatest change in the curvature of the rib. follow ribs from spine until they turn anteriorly
intercostals
place fingers between ribs, have patient breathe in and then cough
coronoid process of the mandible
start at the zygomatic process and move into the soft space anterior to the mandible, have patient open mouth and coronoid process will move into hands
hyoid bone
find the thyroid cartilage and move superiorly
sternocleidomastoid
rotate the head and have patient lift their head off the table.
temporalis
move superiorly and posteriorly from zygomatic process. have patient close their mouth
suprahyoids
start at the bottom of the mandible and move to the floor of the jaw, have patient swallow
diaphragm
contralaterally pull ribs toward you and dig hands under ribs. have patient breathe in
