NSAID examples
Diclofenac, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Indomethacin
How do NSAIDs work?
Blocks COX enzymes = Reduces production of prostaglandins
Why doe NSAIDs lead to bleeding/ulcers?
Block COX 1 which is protective of stomach and promotes clotting
NSAIDs Contraindications
Peptic Ulcer/Stomach bleeding, Hypertension, Kidney disease, IBD
What do NSAIDs do to Blood Pressure?
Increase it
NSAID Interactions
Decreases elimination of lithium and methotrexate = toxicity
Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin etc
Diuretics - Reduce blood flow to kidneys
Opiate examples
Codeine, Morphine, Heroin, Oxycodone, Fentanyl
Opiate Side Effects
Respiratory depression + Bronchospasm, Itchiness, Constipation
Example of a Non-Opioid
Paracetamol
Paracetamol Containdications
Liver problems, Renal impairment, Shock
