What are the major actions of NSAIDS?
Anti-inflammatory
Antipyretic
Anti Platelet
Anti tumour
What are the side effects of NSAIDS?
Worsening asthma, bone marrow toxicity, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, haemorrhage, hypersensitivity, liver damage, headaches, dizziness, stroke, cardiac disease, and ulcers.
Side effects of opioids? Eg morphine.
Increased tolerance, increase the dose to feel effects, dependence, bradycardia, hypotension, constipation, delayed gastro emptying, itching, crosses placenta barrier, nausea, vomiting, coughing, respiratory depression, hypersensitive, anaphylaxis sedation, coma, death
Consquences of alcohol?
Linked to 60 diseases. May cause intoxication, psychiatric and social problems, addiction, anxiety, insomnia, GIT upset, headache, hallucinations, seizures, delirium, agitation, hypertension, tachycardia, electrolyte imbalance, stroke, TB, cancer, malnutrition.
If a mother drinks during pregnancy, child may have fetal alcohol syndrome,
Warnick’s syndrome- affects vitamin B which is vital for brain function.
Consequences of smoking?
Cancer, lower life span, vascular disease, stroke, MI, ulcers. 10% cause of lung cancer, 80% cause in COPD deaths.
Consequences of cocaine?
1/6 of users become addicted
Psychosis, coma, seizures, stroke, bleeding, tachycardia, MI, hypertension, kidney failure, coagulation issues, addiction, wasting of the nose because of inhalation, insomnia.
Consequences of cannabis?
Negative
Chronic bronchitis, impaired cognitive function, low birth weight, psychosis, schizophrenia, MI, CVA, COPD, addiction, cancer.
Positive
Relief from chronic pain, anxiety, chemo inducted nausea and vomiting, MS-related problems, short term sleep, AIDS/HIV wasting and pain, Tourettes.
