Side effects are made up of 2 things. What are they?
Effect and Incidence
Willow Bark for fever
Contained sallicilates. Was inconveninet (expensive, hard to get, variable effectiveness)
Salicylic Acid
Analgesic, Antipyretic, and Antinflammatory. Originally expensive but was synthezised and became cheaper (coal tar). It also caused stomach pain.
A.S.A. (Aspirin)
Made from salicylic acid. Treats pain, fever, inflammation, and reduced heart attack risk. Causes tinnitus, stomach irritation, and interferes with blood clotting. Also is correlated with Reye syndrome in children. Works by blocking the cyclooxygenase enzyme (inhibitor) to slow the reaction.
Generic drugs vs. Brand name drugs
No difference aside from cost. Must have similar bioavailability and be the same drug.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
Treats pain and fever. Causes liver toxicity when used with alcohol in system (Cytochrome P450).
Ibuprofen (Advil)
Works by blocking cyclooxygenase enzyme. Treats pain, fever, and inflammation. Causes stomach irritation and reduces blood clotting.
Naproxen (Aleve)
Treats pain, fever, and inflammation. Blocks enzyme. Causes stomach irritation and interferes with blood clotting.
