Headaches Flashcards
2 classes of headaches
Muscular and Vascular
Muscular headaches (causes and treatment)
Caused by stress and tension (muscle bands around skull). Can treat with any type of over the counter pain medication (A.S.A., Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen)
3 types of vascular headaches
toxic, migraine, and cluster
toxic headache (causes, treatment)
Cause by poison in blood stream. Blood vessels dilate to get poison out but caused pain in head. Made worse with congeners, age, histamines, nitroglycerin (vasodilator).
Caffeine can help because it vasoconstricts but if reducing amount of daily caffeine, will cause vasodilation.
Treat with A.S.A., Ibuprofen, and Naproxen
Most harmful compound in alcohol metablolism.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase.
Migraine. (Causes, Description, Treatment)
Can be initiated by almost anything.
Follow the progression of Prodrome, Aura, Pain, and Postdrome.
Prodrome: 30-40 % of people experience when having a migraine. Causes mood swings.
Aura: 20-30 %, hallucinations, vertigo, and issues with sensitivity.
Pain; involves half of the head. Lasts 1-72 hours. Nausea is common; movement will make it worse. Can experience sensitivity.
Postdrome: Exhaustion, Euphoria or Deppression, and “hungover” feeling.
Treat with A.S.A., Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen. Can also treat with triptans to prevent it by replacing the serotonin that drops in the Aura phase.
