PAG - Dissection of a heart Flashcards
Equipment -
- sheeps heart
- dissection board
- scissors
- tweezers
- dissection needle
- scalplel
- dissenfectant spray
- beaker of disinfectant
- ruler
- pins/labels
why do we need disinfectant spray/disinfectant in a beaker, and why do some potentially wear gloves
to reduce the spread of potential infections
first step -
- examine external surfaces of the heart
- place fingers inside 4 chambers to feel differences in wall thickness
- identify coronary artery and where it comes from aorta, cut fat away with scissors if needed
once we have located the valves when examining external surfaces we may put water through the pulmonary artery/aorta - what will happen
-semilunar valves will close
- squeeze the heart to open the valves again to allow water out
next step - actual dissection
- cut through wall of left atrium and follow down to the apex
- open up left atrium and ventricle to examine
what can we use a dissection needle for once opened the heart
- to locate valves
- pull on tendinous cords to see how strong they are
what are tendinous cords
heart strings
what are tendinous cords attached to
AV valves
av valve - left side
bicuspid valve ( valve has 2 flaps)
av valve - right side
tricuspid valve ( 3 flaps)
if we see the semi lunar valve during dissection, what will it look like
half moon shape
once we have repeated dissection steps for the right side of the heart, what will we do
- use a ruler to measure thickness of the walls of left and right atria and ventricles
after we have measured thickness of heart walls, what can we do
produce a scientific drawing
what should the scientific drawing include
- title
- scale bar ( use values from ruler measurements to make diagram to scale)
- pencil
- no shading/colouring
- label lines do not overlap or have arrow heads
packing away
- all dissection equipment needs to be placed in beaker of disinfectant to kill any possible pathogens
- place heart, gloves, paper towels in a disposable bag
- clean used surface with disinfectant
health and safety
- wear a lab coat
- any cuts on hand, cover with plasters
- hearts should be stored in freezer until disposal
- when using a scalpel take care
- wash hands with bacterial hand wash
- maintain good hygiene = raw meat
